How do the moods work?

By restricting the sampling range in HSL: pastel is high lightness with low saturation, vivid is high saturation at mid lightness, dark is low lightness, and warm and cool restrict the hue band. Because the range itself is constrained rather than results being filtered afterwards, every generated colour lands inside the mood.

Can I use the output directly as a palette?

As a starting point, yes. A shared mood means a shared feel, not sufficient contrast between the colours. Check any text and background pair against the WCAG 4.5:1 threshold with the colour picker, or build a full scale from one base colour with the palette tool.
